Offerings from Iowa’s Flagship University

Founded in 1858 and coeducational from its start, Iowa U. serves as the flagship of university of the state of Iowa. It is one of the invaluable members of the prestigious educational organizations as Universities Research Association and Association of American Universities. The environment is a great place for students to discover their potential and indulge in their passions.

Today, eight colleges and its graduate school administered academic offerings. They offer the following programs: (1) over 100 baccalaureate degree programs; (2) 112 master’s degree programs; (3) 83 at the Ph.D. level; and a (4) a professional degree program in Veterinary Medicine. ISU is classified as a Research University with very high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Meet CY, the Cardinal and school colors cardinal and gold

Iowa State University mascot for the sports teams is CY, the Cardinal. Although, the University’s moniker has long been cyclone but it was difficult to depict cyclone in costume. The cardinal was chosen from the cardinal and gold of the official school colors. The cardinal-like bird was introduced at the 1954 homecoming pep rally. CY is on duty more than 200 days out of the year most trying for a single individual. Each spring, the campus will announce tryouts for the upcoming CY. A spirit squad team with other students serves as panel of judges to select the most animated candidates to serve as the mascot squad for next year.

The official color of IU is gold and cardinal to reflect the clarity and depth of their community’s values that is deeply rooted in the university’s land-grant mission. Consistent use of the colors created a strong and consistent graphic image for the university.

Living in a positive learning environment provides more than what a student needs. Academic assistance is always available while lasting friendships will bloom. It is a fertile place for leadership opportunities.  Convenience and all for these prove that living on campus will truly enhance your college experience. The Iowa State Department of Residence offers a variety of neighborhoods ranging from suite-style residence halls to family-student apartments available to fit your needs and lifestyle.

The majority of incoming freshman students prefer to live in Richardson Court and Union Drive neighborhoods where most rooms are standard double. However, there are a limited number of single and triple rooms available. Iowa State’s Greek community and chapters are known for the quality experience provided to student members. There are 41 chapters provide housing to more than 1,500 students.

Life in a University

Outside of the classroom, more than 800 clubs and organizations are inviting membership. You will be invited by the President of the juggling club; approached by the Captain of your broomball team; convinced by the Secretary for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars to join their scholastic search. With Iowa’s membership in Big 12 Conference boasting 18 intercollegiate teams, you are welcome to any one of them. You don’t need to be a big-time athlete to enjoy some major competition. Participation in Iowa State’s intramurals and sports clubs number in the thousands each year. Iowa State has outstanding facilities for the performing arts, including the 2,700-seat Stephens Auditorium. Life in the campus is an experience of a lifetime.
