The University of Arizona is a public research university founded in 1885. It is ranked 129th in the United States. Due to its enrolment levels, of over 38,00o undergraduates, is considered the biggest public university.

The University of Arizona has 6 campuses. The Tempe campus, west campus, polytechnic campus, Downtown phoenix campus, ASU-Mayo medical school campus and the ASU colleges in Lake Havasu City. These campuses offer over 300 undergraduate degrees and graduate programs. 5 of these campuses are located in the Phoenix, Arizona area, whereas the West campus is found in Northwestern Arizona.

The Arizona State University is thought of as a research university with very high research activity. Amongst the top public research universities, ASU is considered 31st. It is thus classified as a Research I institute.

The Golden Imp

The Arizona State mascot is Sparky The Sun Devil. He was designed by Walt Disney artist, Bert Anthony, who also happens to be an alumnus of ASU. He was created to replace the previous bulldog mascot, and was voted in by the student body. He frequently attends team games across the country, and has a tradition of doing pushups after every touchdown of the Sun Devils.

The official colors of ASU are maroon and gold. Gold is considered the representative color of ASU, as it stands for the promise that every student should receive a worthy education. Maroon and white were added in later years, but gold is still considered the ASU color.

Home away from Home

The Arizona State University dorms are organized into what they call residential colleges. Students live with other students from the same colleges as them. This allows students to improve their study skills and encourages them to engage in community activities, so that they can develop networks with similarly minded people. The Arizona State University dorms offer laundry machines, cable and even dining.

Life at Arizona State University

Arizona State University holds over 1000 student organizations, which shows the diversity of its student population. The Sun Devil involvement center provides a wide range of extracurricular activities to get students involved. These include clubs, Greek organizations, and even student government. In addition the university offers students the opportunity to join media like student publications or the two campus radio stations.

Students get to participate in sporting activities. The Sun Devils as the school teams are called, participate at the National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I. They excel at several men’s and women’s sports, including but not limited to archery, badminton, golf and baseball.

The Arizona State University has several traditions. One of them is “A” mountain, a large letter A placed on Tempe Butte. It is painted various colors at the beginning of each school year. Also the victory bell that is rung after every win of the football team by the ROTC cadets. The lantern walk is a very old tradition, done before homecoming to commemorate the work of everyone associated with ASU over the years. Alumni, students, faculty and staff walk through the campus with lanterns up to “A” mountain and it ends with a firework display.
